5 Things to do Before Work

I am a morning person. It runs in my family and as I get older I’ve seen to catch the bug that doesn’t allow me to sleep in.

My mom and dad both get up naturally between 4:00-5:00 every day. On weekends I find that regardless of how late I stayed up the night before, I can’t sleep past 7:30.

During the week, knowing my alarm is set for 6:00, my body tends to wake me up around 5:00. I used to just lay in bed, or try to go back to sleep but new year, new me… right?!

So…. I decided to take advantage of that hour and O.MY.WORD. has it has positive effects on my mentality, my physical well-being, and my whole day.

Here are 5 things I do every morning BEFORE work that make my day 100% better:

1)      Exercise!!!

I used to ALWAYS be so so so terrible at exercising in the morning. I couldn’t justify getting out of my cozy bed to work out. My workouts suffered because I would be tired after work so I would either not work out or my work out would be mediocre.

Now, I make sure to do at least 30 minutes of yoga, cycling, running, etc… in the morning. I still like to attend some of my favorite classes in the evening, but burning a few calories, kick-starting my metabolism, and just moving in general is the perfect way to start my day.

My newest craze has been ‘Yoga withAdrienne’- a channel on YouTube that has 31 days of Yoga and works you through the beginner levels to a more advanced level by the end. I highly recommend checking her out!

2)      Drink at least 16oz of water!

You already know you need to drink 7 or 8 glasses of water a day.

If you aren’t, that’s step one. But drinking at least 2 of these glasses right when you wake up helps to rev up your metabolism, purify your digestive system for the day, and re-hydrate your body after not having drank anything all night.

3)      Watch or read the news!

Here in the U.S. it has been a very interesting few years and that likely will only continue. The world is an interesting place and there is just so very much going on.

A lot of people have strong opinions on politics and world events.

Watch the news. Be informed. Make your own opinions based on facts and information.

If even for only 5-10 minutes in the morning read the headlines, watch the headlines, know what is happening today in history.

4)      Eat breakfast!

Not to sound like your mom, but breakfast really is the most important part of your day.

It boosts your metabolism, gives you nutrients you will need for the whole day, and gives you energy to concentrate throughout your morning.

A lot of times I eat ‘grab-and-go’ things so I have extra time in the morning. See here my post on my favorite overnight oats recipe.

Other times I sit down while I’m watching the news with a cup of coffee and a bowl of cereal to relax for just a few minutes.

Either way is fine, just make sure to do it!

5)      Take a shower!

For very obvious reason I don’t have any photos to go along with this. BUT I always feel 100% better if I take my shower in the morning.

In college I used to take one at night, but I just didn’t feel as fresh as I do now that I shower in the morning.

Of course I still have those mornings where I oversleep a little, wash my face, and use my favorite dry shampoo (favorite #1, favorite #2, favorite #3). BUT I really do try to shower in the morning as many days of the week as possible.

My skin looks better throughout the day, my hair looks better throughout the day, and I feel better throughout the day!
