I've been wanting to do this post for as long as I can remember but I never felt my cubicle at work was perfect enough to post it. But, I finally bit the bullet and gathered some pictures to show how I've made my standard cube at work a home-away-from-home. It's nothing over the top or glamorous, but it definitely stands out from the rest of my coworkers and creates and inviting and productive work space.
For awhile my cube was pretty bright with post cards and travel knick-knacks spewed everywhere. About a month ago I decided to switch that up and make my cube more classy and modern looking. I decided to go with a marble, copper, and pink theme and I'm really happy as to how it turned out. With the iridescent lighting it was a bit hard to capture the small details, but I think you still get the vibe I'm going for. So, without dragging the intro out too long, here are the products I got to make my perfect little space feel 'home-y.'
Custom Desk Surface
It's a bit hard to tell in the pictures but I put marble contact paper on my desktop surface to give it an extra pop. This is by far my favorite of all of the details and I get raving reviews from everyone that stops by my cube. It has such a modern, classy feel and I'm so obsessed.
I got this marble contact paper off of Amazon and for reference used 3 rolls on my space.
Copper Office Accessories
My copper office accessories are the items that really add some flare to my cube. All of my old provided office accessories were either black or gray and were likely purchased in the 80s and recycled for years and years and years. My coworkers are so jealous of my supplies, and I've told them a million times over that my items were extremely cheap on Amazon.
I decided to purchase copper everything: scissors, a stapler, a tape dispenser, a post-it note holder, folder baskets, and pens. I also purchased a marble print mouse pad and a 'girl boss' acrylic business card holder for extra personal touches.
Photos of Loved Ones
This one is pretty much a given and I don't know many people that don't have their spaces decorated with photos of loved ones. I have two areas I've set up pictures. The first is right next to my computer where I framed a picture of Devin and me. He's always my #1 fan so it's so nice to have him right new to me while I work all day.
The second is a little display I put up right under my cabinets. I hung a piece of twine and clothes pinned pictures of my family and best friends. I get so many compliments on that little area and it was SO easy to do.
Right near my computer and my phone I have a small display of water bottles and coffee mugs that I rotate through using. I have a Yeti that I drink either my hot or iced coffee from each day because it makes it last from morning to afternoon. I also have a copper Swell water bottle that I drink my water from. That replaced my Kate Spade H monogrammed water cup that still sits there just looking nice. And finally I have a small coffee mug for any afternoon tea or hot chocolate that says 'be the Leslie Knope of whatever you do.' They're all very personalized to my style and personality and they're a perfect addition to my desk.
I keep my phone in a little antique looking crate, which I think really helps define the space. On top of that crate I keep my challenge coins that I've collected from my time working for the DoD and Federal Government. Those coins are used in that community to signify a job well done. They're primarily used between different units in the military, but they have trickled over to the civilian side as well.
For your space you may not have tokens like that, but make sure to display awards, certificates, diplomas, etc... as a way to display your hard work and pride.
I'm a sucker for motivational quotes. I have a very lengthy Pinterest board dedicated to them. I use them as basically every Instagram caption I have. Something about reading quotes from other people and realizing that you're not alone in whatever feeling, good or bad, you're currently going through.
For my cube I got a 4-set of white frames from Amazon and used marble-print paper to print "#girlboss" "she believed she could so she did" "hustle" and "nevertheless she persisted."
To make sure that a little piece of my cube was with me for all aspects of my work-day including meetings and off-sites I bought white, black, and gold foil folders that compliment my cube and get rave reviews in all of my meetings. They look extremely put-together and make organizing my different projects so easy!
This is a MUST. One lesson my mom always taught me was to have a candy jar. I've embraced that lesson in every job I've had and she was right. At first it's a good way to meet new colleagues because they will easily come say hi when candy is involved. From there, it's just a good way to have a bit of social interaction with my coworkers and for a pick-me-up everyone in awhile. I use mason jars that I've put on a white ceramic tray to really make the space look nice and I keep it stocked usually after every holiday when I can get candy on sale.
I hope this was helpful and I hope you are inspired to decorate your space to match your personality. For me it creates a workspace that makes me feel both more relaxed and more productive. I love going to work and I love returning to my cube after meetings. It's now a very happy and 'Haley' space and I'm so happy with how it turned out.
